About Us

The Vermont Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program was established in 2008, and is housed at the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. The  Vermont SANE program trains, supports and certifies a cadre of highly trained nurses across the state who provide forensic medical care to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and abuse, and collect evidence in accordance with a standardized evidence kit. There are currently fifty-three Adult/Adolescent SANE nurses and 14 pediatric SANE nurses practicing in 14 Vermont hospitals throughout the state.

The SANE Program provides education, training and certification to nurses across Vermont.  In addition, the SANE Program provides training and technical assistance to allied medical professionals and criminal justice system partners. We work with our partners to design, provide and track sexual assault evidence kits used by SANE nurses to collect forensic evidence.
