A Pediatric Medical Forensic Exam …

Is available to any child for whom physical abuse, sexual abuse or emotional neglect are suspected. The exam prioritizes ethical, compassionate, child-centered medical care with the goal of collecting accurate and complete information to determine if child maltreatment has occurred.

A Pediatric Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) performs the exam, and collaborates with systems providers to respond to the child’s needs. Pediatric FNEs are trained to promote child safety and protective factors - while respecting the impact of trauma on the child and their family. Pediatric FNEs work closely with the Child Safe Program at the University of VT Children’s Hospital.

The exam and treatment provided are guided by the child’s assent  and choice. Throughout the process, the Pediatric FNE will work together with the child and their caregivers to document medical information and forensic data. The exam typically includes 1) gathering a history of the concern and capturing any relevant details that occurred before or after the event, 2) a developmental observation and head-to-toe assessment to determine the impact of what happened and what kind of care is needed, and 3) evidence collection for possible use in a criminal investigation.

A referral to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) will be considered for any minor under the age of 18  - including teens who receive a adult/adolescent SANE kit. In many situations involving young children, a DCF report has already been made and the pediatric forensic exam is part of the recommended follow up care for the child.
